Frequently Asked Questions

What is a mid-market exchange rate?

+

The mid-market rate is the midpoint between the buy (bid) and sell (ask) prices quoted on the global foreign exchange market. It is the fairest benchmark rate and is used by financial data providers like the European Central Bank. Banks and payment services typically add a margin on top of this rate.

Why does the rate differ from what my bank charges?

+

Banks and money transfer services add a spread or fee on top of the mid-market rate to make a profit. This markup can range from 0.5% to over 5% depending on the institution and currencies involved. The rate shown here is the reference rate before any such fees are applied.

How often are exchange rates updated?

+

Rates are sourced from the Frankfurter API, which publishes European Central Bank reference rates each business day around 16:00 CET. Our converter caches these rates for up to one hour, so you always see data from the most recent ECB publication.

Why is EUR treated as the base currency?

+

The European Central Bank publishes all reference rates relative to the Euro (EUR), making EUR the natural base for this dataset. Our converter automatically cross-calculates any pair — for example USD to JPY — by routing through EUR behind the scenes, so results are accurate for all supported currencies.

Can I share a specific conversion with someone?

+

Yes. The converter updates the browser URL as you change the currencies and amount, so the full conversion is encoded in the link. You can copy the URL from your address bar and share it; anyone who opens it will see the same currencies pre-selected.
